Select the best piece of equipment for the application and event.  Not every event needs to have a fancy sterling silver chafing dish.  Some would do just fine with a high quality stainless one or disposable one.

An inexpensive chafing dish is just that. It is not as durable as a sturdy general purpose one. You might have a need for higher end fancy looking chafing dishes, but may want to rent those as the need arises

Review the number of events that you need this piece of catering equipment.  What is the most that you will be needing on any one day?  What is the average?  How often do you need more than your inventory allows?  Are there some events where you could use a disposable chafing dish?  Perhaps you might want to rent only for fancy catering events or during peak picnic times and holiday seasons.  If you need to rent the item more than three times, you are most often purchasing the item if you have the financial resources and storage space available.

When obtaining prices for purchasing quantities of six or more units, contact several sources of commercial catering equipment suppliers and ask them about any discounts, rebates or special offers available for that size of purchase. 

Also, during a local, regional or national food show, talk with the manufacturer's representatives about buying their sample directly off of the show floor.  Most often, they would rather sell the item at a discount instead of shipping it on to the next trade show or city. 

If a discount is not available at the time of year when you are ready to make a purchase, ask the distributor or manufacturer about seasonal opportunities.  One company offers a buy two get one free discount every spring for certain pieces of catering equipment.
